Doggy question (dachshund)

Posted by gerry on July 18, 2000 at 15:30:53:

My doxy seems to continually get skin lesions that the vet calls a staff infection. He says he gets it up from pollen picked up off bushes and leaves he scrounges through.

After 2 weeks of antibiotics, they all cleared up, but a month later it started up again. I don't believe we can keep the little guy on antibiotics forever.

Anybody got any suggestions?

thanks,
gerry.

Gerry,

What about trying a medicated soap or shampoo ?? If there
just a few at a time why not dab something on them ?

hi gerry,

Have you gotten a second opinion? I would. It can only help to get more information! I would have to wonder why ALL dogs don't get bacterial infections from such natural behavior.

My brother's Golden Retriever had a lot of skin lesions in the fall and spring, and it ended up to be seasonal allergies. She had benadryl shots every so often to keep it under control.

Also, vets are only human, and there are good ones and bad ones. I had a vet I trusted a lot and later found out he wasn't really all that good. It took me a trip to the emergency vet for it to sink in.

Good luck with your little one!

Hi, Gerry.

I am surprised that your doc has not told you about esential oils (orally) since it was veterinarians who basically taught it to us human docs. This is almost certainly a skin condition so common in many breeds that is due to an increased need for omega 3s.

Go to the healthfood store and ask them for 1000 mgm capsule size of Omega 3s. NOW (brand), in my experience, is among those with the highest quality and best price. Start your dog on about 4 of those a day and watch the skin clear up. THEN, if you want others to be helped, go back to your vet and bring her up to date.

Once your Dachshound's skin is clear, you can cut the dose by 1000 milligrams a day (about every 3 months) until the problem starts to come back. That way you can learn what the maintainance dose is. It is different for every dog. You can't give them too much but why waste it?

MY Labarador needs 2000 twice a day.

Let us know what happens.

Walt

Hi Dr. Stoll,

Would the same thing apply to my Shih Tsu's itching? The poor guy does an awful lot of scratching. He's on some medication from the vet and got a shot of something which helped, but alas only temporarily. He also gets a lot of ear infections. Thanks for your input.

Walt, you saved me from posting my question - I was more interested in what kind of dog you had than your car!

My old Elwood a 14 year odl lab-chow mix) is going to get with the Omega 3's this week. His skin is worse every summer. I know the EFAs are what is making my skin look better than in a long time. Thanks.

Joanie,

Probably. Remember, though, allergy is the second most common cause of this. It is just that replacing the omega 3s is SO easy and safe (AND it is the most common cause) that it is what I would try first.

The best resource for information like this is the Whole Dog Journal. I discovered it last year and it is, by far, the greatest newsletter for helping pets with conventionally poorly resolved conditions. Call (800) 829-9165 OR contact them by their website at wholedogjl@palmcoastd.com. You will be glad you did.

Let us know what you learn.

Walt, what you supplied was an email address, and a non-functional (probably old) one at that.

I think the link below is what you meant to share, based on the fact their 800 number matches what you supplied.
