I have a dog question too!

Posted by Friend on March 12, 2002 at 13:34:24:

Our dog has a strange skin ailment that the vet has been unable to diagnose or treat. He's a Golden Retriever and his skin is a charcoal color in some areas and often he completely loses patches of hair in the affected areas. The vet has tried thryroid medication to no avail and now we are giving him fish oil. He's healthy and this has been going on for numerous years but it would be nice to treat and resolve it.

Thanks for any input!

My guess would be seasonal allergies. Is it worse in the spring? I have a cat with the same problem, and she is a calico with the patchy colored skin like your retriever. You can get a skin salve in the pet section of your health food store that will stop the flaking and itching.

Perhaps you can find a book on dog allergies in the library, or you can write to Tufts Veterinary School library. They would show pictures of the different skin problems dogs have. I agree with kt that it definitely could be seasonal allergies. The people who own the gym I go to have a Golden Retriever who is continuously given medicine for her allergies. Good luck. Raisa

Thanks to both! I will look into allergies, nmi

What have you been feeding him (brands, etc.)?

Hi LT,

We feed him Science Diet.

When I fed Science Die I thought I was being such a good dog-mom, but I found out later that I was being duped. In fact, here's a list of some ingredients I won't accept in kibble that I would feed: any corn, sorghum, soybean meal, any by-products, BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin, Propylene glycol, or Propyl Gallate. Some dogs also can't handle wheat or barley. I'm willing to bet that the formulation of SD that you feed contains at least three of those things in the list.

My dog has numerous food allergies, and her belly was almost black. Now that I have her diet straightened out, it's nice and rosy pink the way it should be. I asked several vets about the change in skin color, but none of them told me anything meaningful.

Did your vet do a blood test before and during the thryoid meds? Did your dog's behaviour change at all while being on the meds?

I would try a different food -- maybe Nutro Natural (not the Max), California Natural, Sensible Choice, etc.
