Hi:
Because my children are in lower grades at school and I teach small children as well as provide aftercare for three others, we are exposed to everything but usually make out okay until this winter. After catching every GI bug to come down the pike, we all have a nasty RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Viris) that is worse than any flu we've ever had. The cough is severe, extremely productive and lasts forever (my 5 yr. old daughter's symptoms started in the middle of January and she is just now starting to get better). Because my son's asthma is the worst of the three of us and he's just started with the cough, I want to head it off quickly before his asthma goes full throttle.
Any natural suggestions? His doctors usually have us start the nebulized ventolin early prophylactically and add Promethazine with codeine to stop the cough before it inflames his airways. I've heard cupping the hands and sort of pounding lightly is good to loosen the globs of goop in his chest.
I don't know how to express how bad this bug is except to say that my mild asthma is so badly exacerbated that my peak flow meter readings were down to 200-250 before I had to go on prednisone and even that is only holding it at bay. My daughter's whole class has this. Needless to say, I've bleached every surface in the house but we're just so sick I'd like to find some non-pharmacological ways to help the kids.
Thanks so much,
Signed:
One tired Mom in NY

Yes, Laura. I can identify, totally. I've had a group home daycare for the last 14 1/2yrs and have seen just about every bug there is. RSV is a particularly nasty one. Three years ago I started giving the kids a complete soy-based nutritional supplement twice a day after I saw good results myself and for my daughter who has Asthma. It bolsters the immune system so that they don't get sick so much and when they do, they aren't deathly ill. My daughter hasn't needed an antibiotic, steroid or her inhaler but a couple of times since then and that's because she got lazy about the supplement. It's definitely worth the effort. Feel free to e-mail if you want to compare notes.

Hi, Laura.
Unfortunately this is an example of "fixing the roof when the sun is shining". To get the entire family a lot healthier, so this cannot happen again--and to be more symptom free all year long--you need to practice serious wellness for the entire family all the time.
For right now, keeping the humidity in the house at at least 40% and taking esterified vitamin C to tolerance for everyone, is the best I can suggest. Forcing fluids, to help the cilia clear out secretions and taking GG Cen 4 times a day will also help. See the colds archives and the home page article.
Let us know how you-all do.

Thanks Dr. Stoll and Cheezi:
Until this year, we really had been a lot better since we started working on wellness and relaxation - actually, since I began visiting your amazing site!
I was just hoping to find something to help Alex get ahead of the game. We're pushing fluids and C and steaming. In lieu of a humidifier (our house is a mold trap) we do frequent showers. I will try this GG Cen you mnetion as I have not heard of that before.
Best wishes and Happy Valentines Day to everyone!

Walt, you answered my unasked question which was whether Guifenesin was appropriate. I didn't know that's what GG Cen was until I looked it up in response to your post.
You're the best,
Laura

also- the cupped hand thig that you talked about does help alot!! espescially right before and asthma meds! and during those coughing "fits". it really does help, it loosens up the phlem, and helps you to have a more productive cough.
i am also asthmatic, with an asthmatic son, and we got rsv about 5 yrs ago- for us using a heated back massager helped- the heat and constant vibrations on the back made it much more comfortable, and helped alillte with the asthma exacerbation.

I can not express how important the estercized C has helped my family and me. Last year during flu season, I was catching every little bug my daughter brought home from preschool. At least one of was sick every month (we had a new baby who bore the brunt of it, even though he was solely breastfed!) My daughter's preschool teacher told me about the use of Ester C and how it had helped her. I split the recommended daily dose three ways and take it three times a day. I have not been sick yet! It is frustrating when you are a healthy person and still seem to catch every little bug under the sun. I hope you babes and you get better!
