Great site! Thanks.

Does anyone know whether taking cod liver oil capsule will give a good dose of Vit D. I don't get much sun, even in summer here in the UK, so I take cod liver oil. Is one capsule enough?

You have to look at product packaging--it varies widely in cod liver oil. Many manufacturers have lowered the vitamin D content in cod liver oil to make it more in the line with the US RDA for vitamin D (which is too low). I also read that the vitamin A in cod liver oil competes with the D, so that may not be the best source for D3. I have started taking a D3 supplement and make sure to take it away from fish oil (I take D3 in the a.m., fish oil at night).

Thanks for that info. I wasn't aware of that problem.

Excellent article, thanks for posting it.

I had the 25 OH Vitamin D test last November arranged by a rheumatologist and my level was 33 (range 51 - 163) so she prescribed AdCal dissolvable for me and told me to take 2 a day forever via a repeat NHS prescription (don't think my GP will agree to that!). When I checked the amount of vitamin D in two tablets it came to 800 IU. The recommended daily amount seems to be far higher than that so I bought some Carlsons capsules at 1,000 IUs each and take 2 - 3 of those instead.

Thanks for posting this link. It was this posted a few weeks ago that alerted me to the fact that my prescription of 800 IUs for deficiency wasn't nearly enough!

It's kind of scary but I am starting to take 2000 iu's of vitamin d a day now... from what I am reading here, there is no way that can lead to toxocity, but I guarantee you that if I ever told a regular doctor that, they would flip.

One of my alternative practitioners is recommending I take 6000 iu's a day.

Helena,

How did you come to have the VD test? I assume you had a health issue. My GP would laugh at me if I told him I wanted a test.

No disrespect but does your GP arrive at the office via horse and buggy ? Any physician not staying up to the voluminous amount of positive news on "D" must be living in a cave !

I have pain and muscular problems following an accident and fall years ago and was recently referred to a Rheumatologist on the advice of a new Physio I'd gone to see.

The Rheumatologist was extremely thorough, arranged an MRI of my spine and tested for such things as Lupus, RA, coeliac disease, Crohn's etc and added the 25 OH vitamin D test at the end. I had no idea until then that vitamin D levels have any effect on pain.

I doubt my GP will prescribe the AdCal indefinitely and I'd rather get a better form of vitamin D and calcium anyway but it'll be interesting to see if she'll agree to repeat the test in a few months to see how I'm doing.

I've just searched and found the thread below on MoneySavingExpert which I thought interesting. I went to the link to the Doctor's Lab in London but can't find any prices, but that's where my results came from.
