Help....my stomach is getting large

Posted by Jan on July 25, 2003 at 16:03:43:

My stomach is getting larger and larger. I am 45, can't be pregnant because I had my basket removed yrs ago. I have had all the tests, colonoscopy, EGD, abdominal sonogram to rule out tumor. Recently I quit smoking and of course I eat more. I'm not much on exercising and I think this is all from over eating and lack of exercise but it had begun before I quit smoking. I recently heard something about iodine (as in iodized salt) causing a large abdomen. I'm beginning to love elastic pants. Anyone have any suggestions? Please don't say sit-ups..........

To put it bluntly...you are getting fat. You better start exercising, do some crunches, I recommend Gilad~Bodies in Motion. Im 49 and can wear a string bikini thanks to this guy. I too developed the pregnant look, I dont have 6 pack abs, but I do have a flat, pretty lean stomach. Exercise now before its too late. You made the best step of your life to good health...quitting smoking. My husband quit over 2 yrs ago and is doing wonderful. EXERCISE my friend, every day or every other day. Gilad is on the Health Channel and he has tapes, he's terrific!!!! Good luck!!

Hi, Jan.

If you are not just getting fat, how about a large ovarian cyst?

You need a good abdominal examination.

Let us know what you learn.

Jan...Before you run the gamut of having tests and worrying, I think the best advice on this post is Terrie's. I too ended up like you after smoking and I started to go to the gym, 1 yr later, my pot is gone!! Do you exercise at all?

Could it be gas bloat? I'm facing the same thing but I'm skinny, 5'7 1/2 and 115 lbs. I had a 23 inch waist, but it has expanded and you can't grab any fat or even excess skin so it must be air. My abdomen is in a constant state of poofiness.

Hi Dr. Stoll,

In response to your post...well, I just got a clean bill of
health last month from my dr. after a full pelvic exam,
she pushed on my belly all over the place but I didn't
have any blood work or urine tests this time because I
was doing SOOOOO much better than last year at this
time. As far as the larger belly-- I have been eating a lot
more since I went to a naturopath last year. I've gained
15 lbs. However, like I said, I'm not seeing any fat but
am bloated all the time.

I think I'm "healthy" but I need to follow your protocol. I
try to eat healthy but often resort to quick foods. I have a
glass of red wine a night, and exercise (cardio and
strength) 3 x a week. I don't stress anywhere near as
much as I used to, and am very spiritual.

I can see how I've improved since last
summer--allergies are very mild whereas they used to
be debilitating, I have an appetite for the first time since
I was 13 (I'm now 29), my toenail fungus is slowly going
away, my energy level is better....but I'm still at the tip of
the iceberg. I've gotta get my sugar and carb cravings
under control-- I was trying to do that through fruit but
now I read that fructose isn't good either...

When I was down and out, and extremely depressed
about my incredible fatigue, allergies, pains, stomach
ailments and overall feeling of sickness last summer--I
finally sought the help of a naturopath. (After 15 years
of being sick, and sick and tired of "conventional"
treatment that was making me sicker! I had 7 years of
allergy shots--the last one of which sent me to the
hospital with a severe allergic reaction.) After testing,
my naturopath said I had very high levels of bad
bacteria in my gut (klebsiella was at pathogen level)
and NO healthy bacteria, even though I had been taking
acidophilus. I had some candida as well. He said that
since I wasn't digesting food at all, my body was
viewing everything as the enemy. I had food
sensitivities that led to environmental allergies. I am
supposed to be on a diet consisting of no dairy, no
wheat, no gluten, no sugar, no fructose, no yeast, no
grains, no alcohol....NO FUN! I was allowed to drink
water, green tea, rice milk (YUCK) and soy milk
(DOUBLE YUCK). I couldn't eat normal bread, just
some sort of styrofoam stuff. No peanut butter, no ice
cream, no fruit, only certain veggies, halibut, sole, cod,
chicken and turkey only for meats--uh...yeah. That all
lasted, oh, about 2 weeks. How does one live like that?
Granted, my energy levels skyrocketed, my allergies
went away, my skin cleared up completely, my hair
looked better...but it was so hard, SO expensive and no
fun at all. How do you find the balance between eating
healthy and enjoying foods and enjoying eating?

I should also mention that when I left my Naturopath's
office, I was loaded up with supplements.... after one
day of Ultraclear I started the worst detoxing--I was
sicker for 3 days than I have ever been in my life. It was
scary as heck to go through that--but now I realize I
should be more scared about what led up to it--not the
detox itself! So anyhow, I was on Ultraclear for 3 weeks
until I started to gag and vomit from it. I was also on
(and am supposed to still be taking) Candibactin,
MGN-3, Collinsonia and some sort of natural
anti-spasmodic that I can't remember the name of.

Currently, I am back to my lazy ways and don't take any
sort of pills, nor do I stick to my diet.

Do you have any advice for me, Dr. Stoll? I really value
your opinion probably more than any other doctor I've
ever talked with. I've passed your tips along to so many
that have really benefitted from it! (Always giving you
and your website credit, of course.)

Sorry this post is so long, I promise to leave you alone
for a while now!

Thanks,
Michele #2

Thanks, Michele #2.

Your note reminds me of the tightrope all of us advanced health thinkers have to tread: How to get quick results without driving the patient to distraction with what it takes to get those quick results AND the slower approach that is easier but risks the patient getting impatient for results and giving up.

Now that you have experienced the fact that it POSSIBLE to get results, perhaps you will be willing to do part of what that took for a longer time to begin doing this slowly.

I can assure you that as you slowly begin to get really healthy it will get easier and easier to the point where you will think that what has already driven you away will seem natural to you. THEN you can begin modifying what you do to find out what YOU need to do to maintain your healthy state.

Is this making any sense to you?

It sounds like, if you would share your note with your ND, she could be able to guide you through this maze. I am sure she has had a lot more than one patient who tried, got results, and failed to continue. Let us know how you do.

Walt

Hi Michele #2,

My diet is even more "restricted" than yours! How lucky you can have soy milk! I have learned that after you eat them for a while, healthy foods are more delicious than the unhealthy ones. I have also made the decision that I am going to have lots of fun exploring all kinds of new, exotic foods and see where it takes me. I shop at a Chinese market, a mediterranean market, and several health food stores. I am learning to become a pretty good cook (still more to learn). Currently I'm looking into buying a food dehydrator so I can make my own meat snacks. I can hardly wait!

How lucky you are that you have found what will help you feel better. It took me decades of feeling miserable and there is little I treasure more than the ability to feel well. The dietary path for doing it can be seen as a drag, or it can be seen as a delight. Your choice. I'm having fun with it!

Best wishes,
Happygal

Michele, I don't have any advice but just wanted to say I thought your post was very special for its honesty. You certainly have a very valid point about the balance between denial and pleasure. We'd still be eating manna if we weren't created to enjoy an abundance of different tastes. And I do hope you find a way to manage your known problems. Is there some way you can reward yourself? If I had to sacrifice so many other foods, I'd go and enjoy any allowed foods I love no matter what the cost. I'd make a big production of meals you CAN eat. If you can pamper yourself in other ways, now would be the time for a pedicure or whatever. p.s. was the anti-spasmodic, bella donna by chance? I found Donatal very effective and it contained bella donna. It softened my intestines which were becoming rigid due to a smooth muscle problem related to hypothyroid disease.

Hi!

Thanks for your note. It's not easy being honest--even though I know no one really knows who I am out there in BB world I still take everything personally, you know? It's hard to admit to laziness and displeasure.

I was on sublingual bella donna for intense colon spasms many years ago, but this was something else--it was something I hadn't heard of and were big black oval shaped pills. Anyhoo--I'm not having to take those anymore which is great.

I think the thing I'm struggling the most with is convenience and motivation. I don't like to cook, which is really making things difficult. I never am motivated to cook big, special meals like this diet requires after work, so I tell myself I'll just cook huge batches on weekends and freeze them into individual portions. But do I really do it? You guessed it--NO. And money is really tight after just buying a house and getting married Oct. 4th. I can't BELIEVE how expensive it is to eat properly! It's cheaper buying junk. Isn't that sickening? Even bottled water is more money than sodas at Disneyworld. It's just mind boggling.

I got a really, really great cookbook for anyone who's interested. It's called the "Allergy Self-Help Cookbook." I highly recommend it. Everything I've cooked out of it has been great. Here's the link to it at Amazon so you can see what it looks like (since I can't paste a picture here)

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/157954276X/qid=1060011213/sr=8-3/ref=sr_8_3/104-8171039-6095155?v=glance&s=books&n=507846

Does anyone have any recommendations for something other than soy or rice milk? I'm not a picky eater, but boy, I just can't stomach either one of those. Dairy is definitely the hardest for me to give up...(Goat's milk is not an option for me, btw)

Thanks!
Michele #2

Jan, you might check out a "Curves" for exercise if you have a hard time staying motivated. I have 8 people in my office going and we HATE exercising but actually like this! I posted on it a while back if you want to read more about it.

(I don't work for Curves, nor do I get anything by making this statement, FYI)

So you ARE going to marry your guy in spite of the gas problem? lol I was just reading that post. Is he off dairy as well? I don't know if you read that long bulletin about alternative medicine but the bottom line is "enzymes" are critical since our food is so compromised. I'm going to look into that myself.
I tried making almond milk for my daughter's little boy. I had read about it in the Fit for Life books by the Diamonds. Some good recipes in there also. You peel the almonds if they have that husk and run them through the blender with water. It actually turns white and is supposed to be very nutritious. But if you are planning a wedding, I can see where you might not get around to doing that any time soon. Just do what you can do.

Almond milk? Awesome! I LOVE almonds and it's something I can actually eat! Whoopie!

Yes, I'm going to marry my gassy man. I haven't really said much to him except "Eww...that is so gross!" "Ewww...get some beano" "Ewwwww...that is not normal" so it's not like the guy is purposely trying to make me insane. Ha ha. I AM, however, insisting on no Mexican food at our wedding! LOL.

I should make him do the diet with me. Heck, if I'm cooking, he's going on the diet no matter what! There's no way in h-e-double hockey stick I'm making 2 meals every night! :-) Maybe that'll clean out his gut, so I don't hear this "I can't help it" all the time...

You folks are awesome. Thanks for all your support! I forgot how much I love this board!

Your welcome, Michelle, all the best in your upcoming marriage. NMI

Hi Dr. Stoll,

Thanks! I somehow missed your post. What you're saying makes a lot of sense. My employer recently added extra insurance so that now naturopathic visits are covered, which makes me very happy. I racked up a $1200 bill with my last naturopath which made it impossible for me to keep seeing him, so maybe now I can get with the program again. I think the more I work closely with a dr., the more motivated I am. Of course, this site seems to keep me more motivated, too.

Thanks very much for your help, kind words and support. You're the best!
