2nd Period in 2 Wks: What is causing it?

Posted by MaryC on September 20, 2003 at 15:00:31:

I am 41, and have just started another period that is only two weeks after my last one. I have had a regular menstrual cycle most of my life and have never had one period follow another one so closely. I do not know what is causing this. I did not see any situation like mine in the menstruation or menopause archives. I also went to webmd and could not find what I was looking for there either. My regular cycle is 4-5 weeks apart, average flow, and no other bothersome symptoms. I have not used any birth control pills for over 5 years. I am absolutely sure that I am not pregnant. I have never had any other female or reproductive problems. Three years ago I had either chronic fatigue syndrome or hypothyroidism. During that time, I missed a lot of periods. When I recovered, my cycle became normal again. I have used thyroid hormone for nearly two years, so I do not think it is related to that. I have started no new medicines or supplements.

I did go thru a time of depression and bracing for about 7 weeks this summer when I got laid off. I went back to work in August and both depression and bracing were then gone. I did have two week's worth of chronic fatigue like symptoms when I started my job. It went away bit by bit two weeks later.

Is this just another by-product of stress? I would think anything to do with chronic fatigue syndrome would shut off my periods instead of speeding them up. I am really puzzled by this.

Hi, MaryC.

Although this is probably premenopausal symptoms, you would be wise to have a pelvic examination to be sure.

Remember, serious wellness usually reverses the aging process about 15 years, at this age, so you could go back to what your periods were like 15 years ago by doing that.

Your previous bracing, chronic fatigue, and depression tells me that you are still operating pretty close to the edge of your cliff. This means that the serious wellness will do you a lot more good than just the menses.

Let us know what you learn and how you do.

Walt

I do have one more question. I had a pelvic exam in April this year and everything was normal. Could anything change that much in 5 months? I am just going to see what happens during the next two months and if this turns out to be a pattern, I'll go back. I'll either get med ins. thru my husband or the next job I get.

I now realize my cycle was regulated by birth control pills for most of my adult life until 1998. With those hormones, then my cycle was certainly not natural. The 3 years of chronic fatigue caused the irregularities. In the two years of being recovered from it, that may have been the only time I had "natural" menstrual periods. And I rarely had cramps and never PMS in those years.

Those 6 weeks were living hell but I kept telling myself I would see the end and that I always would survive. You're right that I operated pretty close to the edge of the cliff. I also seem to have moved away from that edge a little faster, but not fast enough.

I know that I will have to be better prepared in wellness skills if it turns out my job ends Oct. 15. My husband has warned me many times that if I don't find a life outside of the workplace I'll die shortly after I retire. It seems that whenever, I'm working that the wellness routines are easier to follow.

Hi Mary, this could be a one time episode, or the beginning of a pattern for you. If you find that this keeps happening month after month you can take care of this problem naturally! Besure to do the suggestions that Dr. Stoll said. If you still have a problem and your GYN doesn't find anything wrong.......try using progest creme. It will regulate your periods back to a normal cycle. Someimes you don't need to use much to put you back on track. There is a user friendly book about menapause called "natural woman, natural menapause". It will give you lots of information about your body that you will find very helpful.

Thanks, MaryC.

Premenopausal symptoms typically come on suddenly like this. In the beginning, they typically come and go.

The structure of the pelvic organs will not show the doc anything even the very day before these kind of symptoms start.

As a matter of fact, if you get examined again, the very absence of any abnormality in the pelvic exam would be the clue the doc needs to tell you the same.

Wellness, is your best bet for putting off these symptoms for another 10-15 years.

Let us know how you do.

Walt
