MCS - help! Sensitivity to plastics (skin contact, esp eyeglasses, mouthguard)

Posted by June.one [1422.2680] on May 15, 2006 at 14:54:03:

Anyone with chem sensitivities, hope you can help.

My OTC reading glasses a few months ago, were apparently causing problems on the bridge of my nose. There appeared an area like a scab but different in that it was harder and not preceeded by broken skin, greater on left than right. At the time I was experiencing increased sensitivity to the normal triggers like unexpected exposure to fragrance and auto dishwashing detergent (which I usually avoid). Even sheets in the guest room slept on by someone using fabric softeners caused reactivity even after laundering during this time.

Has anyone else experienced this with eyeglasses? I need new Rx glasses for driving (have not been driving with mine lately, weak Rx & not a necessity). Want to know about materials for the nosepiece that may be useable. I know the contact with these glasses caused the reaction as it cleared up upon ceasing to use them.

Also, want to get a mouthguard and concerned about materials used for them causing contact and especially systemic exposure harmful for me.

While the contact exposure may not be such a problem for me now that I am in a period of decreased reactivity I do not want to add to my overall chemical load but want to wear sunglasses, esp when driving. The plastic on the reading glasses was the soft and flexible kind. Wonder if the harder plastics might work out.

Thanks for any and all help, suggestions, comments, experiences.

June

Hi June,

It should be possible to get *nose bridge pad* and a mouthguard made of some inert plastic, such as silicone.

You can't be the first one with this problem.

Have you tried covering the plastic with clear nail polish, (if you are not reacting to that?)

Ron

Ron -

Typically nail polish contains phthalates, acrylates, alcohol & acetates (solvents, bad news for MCS) and polyester. Phthalates, acetates and solvents are very bad for us canaries in the coal-mine.

I will find out about the nose bridge pad. See my next post about someone who had this problem before I knew what I know.

Ron mentioned, "You can't be the first one with this problem." When I was experiencing my reaction, before I figured out what was going on, I recalled the worrisome spots my mom had on the bridge of her nose. She wore glasses full-time and did try various things to decrease the irritation her glasses caused. Don't know if she ever connected the material with the reaction. Anyway, down the road some years she was told she had basal cell CA on the bridge of her nose and had the spots removed successfully. I can't help but wonder if those with this type of sensitivity will develop BC CA if exposure continues (seems likely). It also lends empirical supposition to a genetic factor in MCS. Hopefully protocol was followed in pathological examination of the specimens she had removed as well as in the previous biopsy, and her diagnosis was accurate. I was really scared when I first had these things come up and hadn't made the connection. I'd been reading a lot. Now, though, the skin is perfectly clear and smooth in that area. Actually, it cleared up amazingly fast upon ceasing to wear the glasses. Just thought that was interesting.

Hi June,

Have you read the MCS file? Walt says the 3LS is great for helping chemical sensitivities.

Best wishes,
Jan

Jan! Of course I have read the MCS archives, silly! (after visiting here for 7 or 8 years). But seriously, thanks for mentioning it anyway. Generally I am much improved from the late 90's mostly thanks to Walt, but there are still times my system is overwhelmed. There are so many things to avoid that have a cumulative effect. I think many MCS folks end up spending a lot of time at home.

A bad spell - this time was after oral surgery with anesthesia (also causing a diet dilemna), antibiotics, and financial shortages - really bites because even smaller exposures than the usual provoctive ones can be devastating. I mean, when you go out for fresh air and smell a dryer sheet from someone's vent a block away and get symptoms, that's a really frustrating thing. Because the liver detoxification system works less than optimally it takes some time and effort above and beyond the 3LS. I had worn those same glasses nearly 2 years before, never having this occur. But I figure maybe the materials add to my total chemical load and I should find out about materials that are less harmful for me. Removing and avoiding triggers is massively important for MCS.

BTW, I hope I can get the book soon - I can't wait to see what you and Walt have done. I'm going to try to get an extra one for my local library as well as one for a lender. Maybe I'll have to read it with one of those magnifier sheets that you can just lay over a page, eh?

Hi June.one,

Wow, your current experience sounds really rough. I hope you can find the answers to improve how you feel -- no doubt the anesthesia and antibiotics were an assault on your system. I used to be hypersensitive to noise in a similar way before finding Walt (much better now!) so I can really empathize with what you are going through.

I used to live in New Mexico and heard that some people with MCS would go to live in the outlying areas there to be free of chemicals. It would be hard to make a living probably but the scenery is so beautiful.

In the book, I tried to pull in as much useful information as I could find from this website, plus Walt gave me even more info, so maybe there will be a few new treasures for you in it. Thanks for wanting to share it with others, too.

Take care,
Jan

Thanks, June.

The 3LS is not the cure-all and end-all but will make everything else work better by having it in the background. It IS, though, the solution to many things all by itself.

My first question would be for you to describe, exactly, what you have been doing for the 3LS and how long for each leg. Again, this is a basis not necessarily a cure.

Hope this helps.

Walt

Hi Ron. Nail polish is almost deadly to a person with MCS. Talk about smells!!!
