Thoughts on Healing !

Posted by James [2174.7634] on July 17, 2009 at 14:47:32:

HEALING THOGHTS

I would like to consider an awareness I have long had and open it for thought and debate. It is well documented that healing occurs in stages 3 & 4 of sleep and during parasympathetic elicitation in awake skilled relaxation (alpha/theta states). This is a time of memory consolidation, increase in human growth hormone, detoxification, immune system regeneration, neurotransmitter replacement, tissue repair and neural house cleaning.

When we are in stress mode or sympathetic dominance these restorative activities are greatly restricted or shut down entirely.

I also know that patients that are in late stage parasympathetic dominance (stress breakdowns) often report the inability to connect with their spiritual centers. I have worked with many devout people who felt their God had abandoned them (or could not connect to their inner self) when they were in a profound stress mode - especially true of people with anxiety disorders and other high arousal disorders.

We also know that humans are endowed with the gift of healing. A cut soon is gone, often major illnesses are only a memory as the body brings the full force of healing into play. However when we are under stress load or have an arousal disorder: (IBS, TMJ, CFS, anxiety, IC etc..) or any physical or psychiatric condition the ability to heal is greatly restricted.

We also know that many meditators and those who practice skilled relaxation report profound spiritual awareness, intuitive realizations and altered states of spiritual connection.

We know healing occurs in the parasympathetic state (relaxation response), but why. Why would being in the alpha/theta state elicit healing and peace of mind. Here is my question: what if these states allow us to step out of day to day, mindless arousal and enter into the place of universal energy - our inner self, source, or God presence or what ever cosmology fits our belief system.

It could be that as we peel away the layers of everyday distractions, self imposed demands or major life disruptions that we reach a source of healing/inner connection that lies below the dross of everyday consciousness.

I also know that people that report loss of self and spiritual connection regain it as the nervous system heals and returns to normal....and that many people who learn to enter the parasympathetic state report a spiritual connection for the first time.

Perhaps the old adage that the "Physician Treats While God Heals" is true. I am not suggesting that we anthropomorphize our higher power into a being that we supplicate for healing, as much as how we may learn to connect with that which is always available.

It may be that a profound alpha/theta/relaxation/parasympathetic state is the doorway to reconnect to a source greater than we know...and not just simple relaxation. It could be that during skilled relaxation or meditation the shift in consciousness we feel when we are in the zone is actually us connecting with a source greater than ourselves...and from which all healing occurs.

I do believe in the power of prayer and healing, but I also believe that God wants us to try to take care of our bodies too. He gave us a day of rest, which so many of us don't take, and we wonder why we're stressed all the time. And it is ironic, in this time of technology, where we're all connected with Facebooks, IPhones, and the like, that many of us still feel very alone. SR is such a key component to wellness, and for me, a God given blessing that helps me to chill out. But we are all on different paths, and how I feel may be very different than others.

Absolutely!
Theta seems to be the most powerful, over the alpha state.
Now how do we reach theta, every single time during SR????

An EEG would tell us but it is a hassle. Heart Rate Variability is also a great tool as is galvanic skin response. Once you feel it and confirm it with biofeedback you will forever after know when you are there.

I have great difficulty believing this James. Sure, SR is a way to heal ourselves, but a connection to God? That seems like a "leap of faith".

Wouldn't it be most interesting if achieving that state induces in the brain what mystics have for centuries thought a connection with a higher power, but may be a connection simply with a different self-awareness?

Hi James,

I didn't read everybody's answers, but it seems to me that the healing happens when we stop thinking. In other words, thoughts can block connection with source.

Best wishes,
Jan

Makes more sense to me Helena. It sounds like a different form of consciousness.

Extraordinary claims (i.e. connection to a higher power) require extraordinary evidence. Each to their own, I guess.

I did not say specifically connecting to "God" but removing the impediment to healing place in us or to a higher source.

Thanks, James.

This touches upon the spiritual aspect of healing (in my clinical and personal experience) tends to be automatic once the "temple" is in better shape (the 3LS).

Healing CAN start there but, in my clinical and personal experience it is harder and more problematic than first getting the "temple" in order first. It certainly can be a powerful short cut to healing and health and certainly is worth the effort for those whose philosophicl bent is in that direction.

I would be very interested in hearing from anyone's experience in this regard.

Namaste`

Walt

UK,

In this regard I have to come down COMPLETELY on James' side. These states of mind definitely open channels to the cosmic consciousness (no matter what you call God).

Hi UK,

In the archives in several places, Walt has alluded to Buddhist meditation practice being especially proficient in achieving alpha, theta, and delta "states of awareness." (my paraphrasing here)

Yes, connection to "God" by whatever name you call that power. It seems appropriate not to mention that much because of the variety of religious beliefs out there.

Best wishes,
Jan

stress can cause body systems to malfunction and
break down, and relaxing can let them to do what they
can do normally. Some need to pray to relax, OR feel
there is something Bigger than them that will do it for
them, when I think they do it themselves. Kids need
super heros to help them, and adults need a god. Kids
have the boogeyman, and adults have Satan, while
others don't need Others, or fear anything, and realize
that the natural order of things will repair us if allowed
to, and keep us humming, if we just allow it. Enjoying
nature and the universe, and understand we are Just a
part of it, and everything has its unique place and
abilities, and to learn about and appreciate and admire
them for their uniqueness. We Say we were created in a
gods image and likeness, but what was all the rest of it
created for OUR enjoyment or use? I prefer to immerse
myself into It All, and enjoy the ride, and feel I am no
more important than anyone or anything else.

I don't believe in connecting with a higher power, I believe this higher power molded this thing we have above our shoulder to sort out what is best for our body but I do believe that some people who believe in connecting with a higher power help heal themself because they believe someone is also helping them heal thus they have a more positive attitude to whatever is causing them problems.

Interesting theory Charles. I've noticed that nuns (school teacher nuns, not those in enclosed orders) seem to live to a ripe old age and be very healthy throughout. I thought it was because they live quiet lives and have little stress (although I'd find teaching children very stressful) but perhaps you've got the answer. I think their form of SR would be silent contemplation....

Yup, James.

One of the major reasons I have concentrated on the 3LS rather than focusing upon the spiritual "leg" of all this.

I appreciate your insight!

Actually Helena, wine could be very good for a person, I don't know if it is boiled or not but you lose someone of the chemical activities when that is done.

Grapes have a lot of healing powers, including the seeds.

Cheers!

Actually, Doc, I've always thought of my SR, which is meditation, as the spiritual leg of the SR. I once heard it put this way, when we pray, we speak to God, when we meditate, we're listening for the answer.
