Just wondering...

Posted by Sylvia [9056.7814] on September 24, 2009 at 20:04:50:

Is it possible to reach alpha (or even theta) brainwaves while doing something that removes your connection with your surroundings?
For instance, I love to paint with watercolors and write (anything from short stories to poetry to entire novels.) I've noticed that when I get deeply involved with these activities, I won't hear if the phone rings or if someone calls my name.
Just wondering if one can benefit from something like that.

You may be entranced but low alpha and theta requires the eyes closed and no external stimulation like moving, reading or seeing.

Being deeply involved as you are is very healing..and a great place to discover your muse!!

Got it! It makes perfect sense now that I think about it. When I fell off the cliff, it was precisely when I let work take over and didn't have time for the things I truly loved to do. I'm not making that mistake ever again.

I discovered my muse at a very young age. I was published at the age of 12. My husband is certain that having this happen at such a young age hindered my progress and further development in more than one ways.

Similar question to what Sylvia is asking...Sylvia, I hope this doesn't hijack your thread!

What is the sensation and brain state when you become so absorbed in what you are listening to that you get a relaxed and warm feeling all over?

I have had this happen a number of times in my life, usually in school or at a lecture where I'm in the same room as the speaker, but not for some years until recently.

I attended a lecture/slideshow the other night by a man I know slightly on a subject I'm very interested in. His voice has an interesting accent, I enjoy his dry humor, the way he puts his sentences together, and his manner of speech.

While listening, I was definitely aware of my surroundings and followed what he was saying, but I had a warm feeling emanating from my chest that made me feel good all over. Definitely not a male-female attraction, or anything like that. Maybe a spiritual state or sensation?

Just curious what causes this type of reaction, or if it's just a fluke or something that only happens to me. I wondered at the time if it was an alpha state, but based on James' response to Sylvia's question, and my experience with SR and meditation, probably not.

Thanks for any info,
Nutmeg

What you are describing is akin to daydreaming, road hypnosis or reverie. It is hard to force a test subject into these states but they are generally considered high alpha.

Repetitive sounds or movements can progress you into lower alpha. These are wonderful states unless you are driving and find you don't remember the last 5 miles

Yay, Sylvia!

Listen to Nutmeg & James.

Now, if you can do this at least twice a day for 20 minutes-----

Hi Walt,

I can't help but wonder how a person with ADHD can
practice SR.. ?
The roadblocks must be huge for those who have been
diagnosed and treated for years with Prozac.

Hi Walt,

I'm practicing SR twice daily for the last 3 years or so. I also do yoga, meditation and breathing exercises 2-3 times a week.
I was just wondering if I might be getting extra benefits from my artistic tendencies. It seems the answer to the question is yes! So, yay indeed!

Ron,

That may be why there are 3 legs to the stool. What is the excuse for not doing aerobics and the WFD? Maybe he could get in the "back door" to doing SR.

Thanks, Sylvia.

Probably you are. Have you ever certified your SR technique?

Hi Walt,

Yes, I did certify my SR several times during the first year and a couple during the second year.
Plus, I have all the evidence I need in how I feel. I was a complete mess when I first discovered this site, thinking I'd never be normal or healthy again. Today, not only do I have a normal life, not only have my major issues disappeared (palpitations, shortness of breath, Hashimoto's disease, scoliosis), not only did I have a perfectly normal pregnancy and delivery, but also my appearance has improved immensely. You're not going to believe this, but I had this weird thing happen to me where the skin under my eyebrows was starting to droop over my eyelids. I thought it was aging. Now I think it was a result of bracing because I don't have that problem anymore. It's as if someone gave me a face lift! My eyebrows are high were they used to be, my eyelids are free and my eyes clear and beautiful. Who would have thought!

Congratulations Sylvia, it sounds like the 3LS has done wonders for you. I am curious about your scoliosis disappearing, can you elaborate on that?

Thanks,
k.

Thanks, Sylvia, I am reassured.

To k. I think I have archived this scoliosis relationship to bracing in the bracing archives. It is pretty commonly effective, especially when combined with Rolfing, Alexander Technique or Fekdenkrais.

Thanks Dr. Stoll.

I was asking because as a middle-aged person with a fairly substantial case of scoliosis, I just wondered what if anything could be done to reverse it. I will read more in the archives on this later, but in the meantime, I found two things of interest:

one by you

"Your experience supports what I have noted works: Massage, Rolfing, Alexander Technique, etc.--those things that deal with chronic bracing--will resolve all but the most extreme scoliosis and even that it will help.

It is a crime that conventional medicine only deals with the most expensive and dangerous approaches.
Walt"

"There is an alternative medical treatment called Neurocranial Restructuring (NCR) that can reduce or completely eliminate scoliosis. The premise of the procedure is to re-balance the skull over the spine. The theory is that the spine contorts to balance the skull. If the skull can be re-balanced, the spinal distortions go away. The treatment produces remarkable results. I have undergone the treatment myself and is completely safe. I suggest that you go to www.google.com and type in Neurocranial Restructuring. Click on the first website that pops up. You can read about it and even see photo results. I highly recommend this treatment. Scoliosis can start to diminish in as little as 4 days of treatment

Hi k.

In 1999 I experienced severe backache, I saw a reumatologist who ran several tests and told me I had a mild to moderate case of scoliosis. I started practicing the 3LS in 2005. I started with diet, then exercise and, finally, SR. I also started practising yoga and did stretching exercises. I saw a massage therapist weekly for a year (I now see her once a month.)
Last year I had an x-ray at a chiropractor's office that revealed a perfectly straight spine. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes.

Thanks Sylvia, that is fantastic. What a miracle. You must have been so shocked.

In my case I don't know if my scoliosis is considered moderate or medium, but it's good to know that in some cases such as yours, it really can be reversed. That's hopeful. :o)

Absolutely, k.

I even have an archive about cranial osteopathy (another word for neurocranial or craniosacral restructuring. If I mentioned every structural technique I thouight it would dilute the message. I am appreciative that you have mentioned it!

Thanks Dr. Stoll, your message was not diluted on me. :o)

And you're welcome, I think that the neurocranial technique is particularly appealing to me, because among other things, I would like to eradicate it quickly. If and when I do it, I will report the results.

k.
