Opinion: Learn from Arizona
"To avoid wasting time...first learn about the AZ law"

By Walt Stoll, MD

For 15 years, as a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Holistic Medical Association, I traveled the country getting and giving many post-graduate education courses in complementary medicine. During those years I had the opportunity to observe, first hand, the effectiveness of various states' attempts to legislate protection for patients' rights to alternative approaches (to strictly conventional options for chronic disease)--as well as protecting the licensed physicians' rights to offer them without harassment by the state medical boards.

In all those years I observed only one law that actually accomplished those goals in any significant fashion. That was (and is) the law in Arizona. That is the only state where the law mandates that the alternative practitioner will be judged by her/his peers and not by a state licensing board that not only knows nothing about these alternatives but refuses to learn about them. The conventional state medical licensing boards' mandate is to harass out of practice any threat to the allopathic monopoly and mere facts are not going to get in their way.

All of the laws that leave the power to discipline with the conventional state licensing board has resulted in that board simply harassing the offending physician for trivial things that have nothing to do with alternatives. These physicians are harassed for "poor records", "zoning infractions", "restaurant laws applied to their employee kitchens" and similar selectively enforced infractions that have never been applied to those physicians who carefully only offer their patients strictly conventional options.

To avoid wasting time, effort and money, any citizens wanting to accomplish their goals, as stated above, need to first learn about the AZ law (that has functioned successfully for more than 15 years) and accept nothing less from their legislature. The practitioners in AZ have been very generous with their time helping people learn how they did what they did.
