Pain

Pain is an unpleasant sensation signaling that the body is damaged or threatened with an injury. It is a complex, subjective, perceptual phenomenon with a number of contributing factors that are uniquely experienced by each individual.

Pain begins at special pain receptors scattered throughout the body. These pain receptors transmit messages as electrical impulses along nerves to the spinal cord and then upward to the brain. Sometimes the signal evokes a reflex response when it reaches the spinal cord; when this happens, a signal is immediately sent back along motor nerves to the original site of the pain, triggering the muscles to contract. An example of a reflex response is the immediate pull-away reaction upon inadvertently touching something very hot. The pain signal is also relayed to the brain. Only when the brain processes the signal and interprets it as pain does a person become consciously aware of it.

Referred Pain

Pain felt in some areas of the body may not accurately represent where the trouble is, because pain can be referred to another area. Referred pain happens because signals from several areas of the body often lead into the same nerve pathways going to the spinal cord and brain. For example, pain from a heart attack may be felt in the neck, jaws, arms, or abdomen, and pain from a gallbladder attack may be felt in the shoulder.

Pain, Chronic

Colorado HealthNet Chronic Pain Main Page

Pain Free : A Revolutionary Method for Stopping Chronic Pain

Amazon.com Link
A book by Pete Egoscue, Roger Gittines. At the heart of his program are stretches and motion exercises to restore proper function to muscles and joints. His methods are often surprising and counterintuitive. For example, for foot pain, he suggests a series of hip exercises. In fact, this is one of the most startling books you'll read about the human organism. Egoscue has strong opinions about how modern life is changing the way our bodies function, reducing the tasks we must perform, and thus reducing the functional range of motion of our muscles and joints. Fortunately, he offers movement exercises to restore what nature meant us to have.

Parasites

Walt's Parasites Q&A Archive
Dr. Clark Research Association
Infections or infestations with parasitic organisms.

Walt says: ALL parasitic conditions ONLY occur when the normal colonic ecology is destroyed (LGS). Parasites are all around all of us every day. The reason we do not all have them is because our normal healthy intestinal ecology is very unfriendly to them.

Although it IS true that parasites will make any LGS worse by further damaging the intestinal wall, one has to have LGS first to be able to GET parasites.

First, the bacterial ecology in the gut is a very delicate (though normally stable) one. It is made up of about 500 different species. LGS is a big strain on that delicate balance AND as soon as it begins to change (Dysbiosis) the thousands of pathogenic beasties out there are quick to exploit that opening. Once THEY are established, THEY tend to displace the good bacteria left mainly because the very things that caused the LGS in the meantime are still operating.

The ONLY way to permanently get rid of any parasite is to reestablish the normal ecology in the gut --- which is the only reason we do not ALL have parasites. That means eliminating the LGS which is the cause of the Dysbiosis (abnormal bacterial ecology) that allows the establishment of parasites like this.

Parasite Testing:

The average person in this culture has at least several parasites living in their bowel. The CDC (Center for Disease Control in Atlanta) did a study about 10 years ago that found that the average person handling your fresh produce at the grocery store had 5 parasites found by the even the poor diagnostic techniques we have in this country.

ANYONE with LGS (75% of the population now) has NO protection from parasites setting up housekeeping in the dysbiotic bowel. Candida is just one of these parasites.

If you sent about 6 purged stool specimens to Great Smokies Labs, you would have a pretty good chance of finding most of the ones you have. A negative result is of little value. A positive result is 100% accurate since the parasite would have to be actually seen for it to be positive. To find them more accurately you would have to send your specimen to the state labs in Niger, Africa--currently considered the best in the world.

Pareto Rule of 80-20

Vilfredo Pareto, a 19th-century engineer, noted that 80% of the benefits come from only 20% of the activities. This is true (80% of the time!) at work, in your personal relationships or your finances. Not everything is created equal. Some tasks, activities, duties, and actions pay off better than others. Smart people never forget this, and they focus their busy lives on the (few) things that will help them get to where they want to go.

PCOS - PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome

A condition found among women who do not ovulate, characterized by multiple ovarian cysts and increased estrogen production. PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome Association: (212) 629-1824

PCOS refers to multiple cysts on the ovaries and a host of other problems that go along with them, including anovulation (lack of ovulation) and menstrual abnormalities, hirsutism (facial hair), male pattern baldness, acne, and often obesity. Such women may also have varying degrees of insulin resistance and an increased incidence of Type II diabetes, unfavorable lipid patterns (usually high triglycerides), and a low bone density. Laboratory tests often show higher than normal circulating androgens, especially testosterone.

PCS - Pelvic Congestion Syndrome

Most commonly caused by a combination of bracing of the Levator Ani muscle and a lack of orgasm.

If you do not have a reliable way to achieve orgasm, Walt would suggest Lonnie Barbach's classic book "For Yourself"

Pepto-Bismol

Bismuth SubSalicylate (BSS) is an oral antidiarrheal agent. It is effective for control of nonspecific diarrhea and prophylactic treatment of traveler's diarrhea. BSS has the distinction of being the only OTC stomach remedy proven clinically effective in the relief of both upper and lower GI symptoms, and it is actively being studied for treatment of peptic ulcer disease.

Pepto Bismol Test

The Pepto-Bismol test consists of taking 4 tablets right before retiring and comparing how you feel upon arising the next morning with the way you usually feel. Many people will feel MUCH improved -- and that is an indication of a problem with having gram negative bacteria that can be resolved by taking the Pepto tabs on a pulsed dosing schedule.

Perleche

Walt's Perioral Dermatitis (Perleche, etc.) Summary & Q/A Archive
Perlèche is a Candida infection at the corners of the mouth, creating cracks and tiny cuts.

Perspiration

Walt says the most common cause of excessive perspiration is NOT heat, but chronic anxiety. See also antiperspirants.

Phobias

Walt says: ALL phobias seem to be caused by the same basic brain chemistry mechanism (coupled with the person's life experience so that the actual KIND of phobia presents), so all successful treatments are the same. Start by reading William Philpott, MD's classic "Brain Allergies" and then, if that makes sense to you, read Dr. Gary Null's new book "Nutrition and Your Mind".

Pilonidal Cyst

Walt's Sebaceous Cyst Q&A Archive
Pilonidal Sinus Self-Help Page by Wayne
A special kind of cyst/abscess that occurs in the cleft between the buttocks due to nidi. Forms frequently in adolescence after long trips that involve sitting. After surgery, an inflated donut needs to be placed properly when sitting to keep all pressure from the area of the tip of the tailbone to prevent nidi from popping up again.

The first surgery for a Pilonidal Cyst problem is normally done with the primary closure. This has about a 50% rate of recurrence among even the best surgeons. There is a 70% failure rate for the second surgery, and a 90% failure rate for the 3rd surgery. The failure rate is NOT due to the skill of the surgeon (except in the case of an real butcher) but due to the congenital remnants of the skin tissue which NO ONE can determine before or during the surgery. After the first recurrence, most surgeries are left open to heal by "secondary intention". This is mainly because it would not have recurred unless there was a much wider distribution of "nidi" than was originally allowed for. SO, the amount of tissue removed is much wider. So wide, that it would take a skin graft to cover the wound. Since any "nidi" trapped by THAT surgery would destroy the skin graft, surgeons opt for the safest approach which is closure by secondary intention.

Prevention suggestions for an infant with a Pilonidal Dimple: He/she should probably avoid horseback riding and be sure to use hair remover every 2 weeks starting just before puberty --- forever. Sitting for long periods (especially on hard surfaces) is something he would be wise to avoid.

The single most important thing, for preventing new flareups, is keeping from putting pressure on the spot. This is what the donut is for.

Next, the most effective thing is to apply a hot compress to the site.

Pink Eye

The very best home remedy (more effective than any conventional treatment AND it is free) is the immediate application of hot moist compresses for about 5 minutes as many times a day as you can schedule (at LEAST 4); more than once an hour would probably not help much more.

In addition, you might get some of Dr. Christopher's Eyebright solution (IF you can find it before the compresses already get rid of it--about 48 hours).

The longer you let the problem go before the compresses, the longer it will take to resolve so get at it.

ANY condition that does not resolve in 48 hours with this regimen needs to be seen for possible antibiotic eye drops. There are several other conditions that might, in the uninitiated, feel just like bacterial conjunctivitis (pink-eye). Just be sure that NO Cortisone drops are used until a viral infection of the cornea is ruled out (Many antibiotic eye drops have Cortisone mixed in them.)

The above approach cannot hurt those conditions and the 48 hour delay cannot harm their diagnosis or treatment. These other conditions are pretty rare as compared with "pink-eye".

Placebo Effect

An improvement in the conditions of a sick person that occurs in response to treatment, but which improvement cannot be considered to be due to the specific treatment used. When done by double-blind study, the positive effect of placebo is 30-35%. This level has been remarkably steady as long as double-blinds have been done.

HOWEVER, when the patient knows what they are getting and the doc who gives it to them believes that it will help, AND the patient believes in the doc, the % is 70-75% positive placebo effect.

Plagiocephaly

PMA - Positive Mental Attitude

A positive mental attitude is imperative to passionate longevity. This does not mean to fake that you 'feel fine', or to ' pretend' that you are not sick. It means to make powerful choices of how you handle all things in life - including the adversities and set backs. It means making decisions and choices on a regular basis, not avoiding issues or conditions/situations. See also Positive Thinking and Optimism as relates to Thankfulness and Wisdom.

PNI - PsychoNeuroImmunology

A book by Elliott S. Dacher, M.D. Apparently out of print, but he has written several newer books on Healing. Click on the author's name in the Amazon.com link to see his more recent books.

Psycho-neuro-immunology (PNI) is the scientific study of the effects of the mind on the body (bodymind), and how the mind affects health and healing. A fundamental premise of PNI says that an optimistic person, one with clear objectives, who sees a purpose to their life, and who feels a sense of control over their life, will experience a vitalising influence on their body structure and function. Our state of mind - positive or negative - plays a critical role in our physical well-being.

Positive Thinking

Dailey Positive Personal Development - Free on-line or downloadable book on Positive Thinking

Post hoc ergo propter hoc. (After this, therefore because of this.)

A Latin phrase warning about simplistic thinking that one symptom found along with another symptom *causes* the other symptom. In most cases, the symptoms are both caused by something, here often chronic
bracing.

Postural Strain

Put yourself in ANY position, and hold it long enough and your muscles will get sore. Voila! Postural Strain.

Potency

Walt's Potency Article
If substance "A" is considered 100 times as "potent" as substance "B", it DOES NOT mean that it is better in ANY way than substance "B". It ONLY means that it takes 100 milligrams of substance "B" to achieve the SAME results as a milligram of substance "A". It is the results that matter, NOT how many milligrams it takes to get those results.

Psoriasis

Shirley's Wellness Cafe
A common chronic dermatitis, dry, grayish-white, scaly patches of skin. See LGS and CRS for causes and Wellness for permanent cure.

Walt has yet to see any case of psoriasis that did not also have severe candida-related syndrome. Once the C-RS was dealt with, the psoriasis cleared up. I do not mean to say that all cases of psoriasis are CAUSED by CRS. What I AM saying is that they are closely associated, and the body can clear up the psoriasis if it does not have to deal with the CRS any more.

PTSD - Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Anxiety disorder manifested by the development of characteristic symptoms following a psychologically traumatic event that is outside the normal range of usual human experience. Symptoms include re-experiencing the traumatic event, and numbing of responsiveness to or reduced involvement with the external world.

Purines

Walt's Metabolic Type and ER4YT Diets Q&A Archive
Purines are a special type of protein found in a variety of meats and vegetables. If a food contains protein, it usually contains some Purines. Higher amounts of Purines exist in dark meats (including fish and fowl) as well as crustaceans (shrimp, scallops, oysters, and crab). Purines are most concentrated in organ meats (liver, kidney, heart and other sweetbreads). Nuts, lentils and all beans (including soybeans) have moderate purine content. Asparagus, cauliflower, spinach, peas and mushrooms are vegetables that also contain significant amounts of Purines.

Here is a list with highest purine content to low purine content

  • Organ meats -- including liver Anchovies, sardines, caviar
  • Game meats (non-domesticated animals)
  • Dark meats Crustaceans and other shell fish -- including crab and shrimp
  • Dark fishes (I'm referring to the color of what you eat)
  • Light meats Light fishes (I'm referring to the color of what you eat)
  • Legumes -- including all beans Cauliflower Asparagus Spinach.

Purpose of Ask Dr. Stoll Site

The purpose of this web site is to help people understand WHY they get recurrent (chronic) problems and what to do about the causes -- something the conventional medical monopoly is not the least bit interested in. ALL of the money is in treating the symptoms. SO, this site is one of the very few that addresses that approach. The purpose of this site is NOT to do your research for you.

PVC - Post-Ventricular Contraction

Contractions of the lower chambers of the heart, the ventricles, which occur earlier than usual, because of abnormal electrical activity of the ventricles. The premature contraction is followed by a pause, as the heart electrical system resets itself, and the contraction following the pause is usually more forceful than normal. These more forceful contractions are frequently perceived as palpitations.

PWFD - Perfect Whole Foods Diet

See Whole Foods Diet. The "Perfect" just means doing the diet perfectly, without cheating.
