I searched the site and read the archives for Group B Strep during pregnancy. I tested positive for this and have 10 days till my due date. I tested negative for this with my first pregnancy. We're having a second homebirth. My midwife tells me that if we were doing a hospital birth, I would be given antibiotics via IV prior to birth. Although we use this procedure to attempt to keep the baby from being infected in this country, it is not done in Europe and there is no greater infection rate there. For homebirth, she suggests flushing the birth canal with an over the counter product called Hibiclens an hour or so before birth, which could temporarily kill off the bacteria so as not to pass it to the baby as it comes thru the birth canal. Then she says we could gently wash the baby in warm water after the birth (without scrubbing off the vernix). Is there another way to deal with getting that under control in my body before the birth (only have a week or so)? What about taking probiotics during the last few days of pregnancy....is this safe and in what amount?
