Tattoos toxic?

On 60 minutes on Sunday, they did an expose' on the Japanese mafia members, who generally get full-body tattoos, and then later in life many of them will get severe liver disease sometimes requiring liver transplants which are not permitted in their society, so they come to the U.S. to get the transplant. They explained that the cause of the liver damage was because the skin is so dense with tattoos, that the body can't sweat out toxins, which doesn't really make sense to me. Seems more likely the reason is the toxins in the tattoos dye:
