Well, it looks like you are torn between doing the sensible thing (telling her family), and keeping the friendship intact (keeping your mouth shut).

That is a decision only you can make according to your own morality. Personally, I would rather tell the family than risk having to visit a friend in prison.

Remember, people buy guns for protection with the intent of using them if the situation arises. Are you concerned your friend will use the gun eventually?
