I knew that yellow lentils exist, but couldn't find them called that name, so I wondered what other names they go by. This link I posted above says yellow lentils are called toor dal, but they are sold skinned and split. That must be what I want, because I do want them to cook down to a soft consistency.

It's funny, but the chana dal that I bought the other day at the HFS look exactly like the picture of toor dal in the link above, so maybe they really are yellow lentils. Looking at other links over the last couple of weeks, there does seem to be a lot of confusion and misnomers about yellow lentils.
